Texas City Local Guide: Dining, Shopping & Essentials
Everything you need to know about getting around Texas City — from the best local restaurants and grocery stores to hardware shops and weekend activities near the resort.
Texas City Local Guide: Dining, Shopping & Essentials
Whether you're a contract worker settling in for a turnaround or a traveler making Texas City your Gulf Coast base camp, knowing your way around town makes all the difference. Texas City is a working-class industrial city with a lot more to offer than its reputation suggests — good food, friendly people, and everything you need within a short drive.
Here's what you need to know.
Getting Your Bearings
Texas City sits on Galveston Bay, about 35 miles south of Houston on I-45. The main commercial corridor runs along Texas Avenue and Palmer Highway, where you'll find most of the chain stores, fast food, and services. The older downtown area near the port has a more local feel, with independent shops and restaurants that have been around for decades.
Little Thicket RV Resort is centrally located — most of what's listed here is within 5 to 10 minutes by car.
Where to Eat
Breakfast and Lunch
Denny's on Texas Avenue is the reliable 24-hour option for early morning starts before a shift. For something more local, Sunflower Bakery & Café serves solid breakfast plates and fresh-baked pastries — a good spot to start the day without the chain food feel.
Taqueria El Rancho is a local favorite for breakfast tacos and lunch plates. The carne guisada is worth the trip on its own. Cash-friendly, fast, and consistently good.
Dinner
Benno's on the Beach in nearby Galveston is worth the short drive for Gulf seafood, but if you want to stay in Texas City, Pappas Seafood House on I-45 delivers solid Gulf Coast classics — fried shrimp, catfish, and gumbo.
Los Cucos Mexican Café is a Texas chain with a strong local following. Fajitas, enchiladas, and frozen margaritas — it's a reliable dinner option after a long shift.
For pizza and casual nights, Domino's and Pizza Hut both deliver to the resort area. Whataburger on Texas Avenue is the late-night standard — open 24 hours and a Texas institution.
Grocery Shopping
H-E-B on Texas Avenue is your primary grocery stop. H-E-B is the dominant Texas grocery chain for good reason — competitive prices, excellent produce, a full deli, and a solid selection of prepared foods. The Texas City location is well-stocked and easy to navigate.
Walmart Supercenter on Highway 146 covers everything from groceries to hardware to clothing. Open 24 hours, which is useful for workers on rotating shifts.
Dollar General and Family Dollar locations are scattered throughout the city for quick household supply runs.
Hardware and Work Supplies
Home Depot on Texas Avenue is the go-to for tools, fasteners, PPE, and job site supplies. The Texas City location is well-stocked for industrial and construction needs.
Tractor Supply Co. on Highway 146 carries work boots, gloves, outdoor gear, and farm supplies — useful if you need rugged workwear or outdoor equipment.
Fastenal and Grainger both have locations in the Texas City/La Marque area for industrial fasteners and MRO supplies.
Fuel and Convenience
Buc-ee's in League City (about 15 minutes north on I-45) is worth knowing about. It's the largest convenience store chain in Texas — massive, clean restrooms, fresh food, competitive fuel prices, and everything from beef jerky to RV supplies. If you're heading to Houston or coming back, it's a natural stop.
Locally, Murphy USA at the Walmart and several Valero stations along Texas Avenue offer competitive fuel prices. The Love's Travel Stop on I-45 is convenient for diesel and propane.
Banking and Services
Most major banks have branches in Texas City — Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Frost Bank (a Texas regional favorite). ATMs are widely available at H-E-B and Walmart.
CVS and Walgreens both have locations on Texas Avenue for pharmacy needs. UTMB Health operates a clinic in Texas City for non-emergency medical care, and HCA Houston Healthcare has a full emergency room at the Texas City campus.
FedEx and UPS stores are available for shipping tools, equipment, or personal items.
Weekend Activities
Texas City Dike
The Texas City Dike is a 5-mile concrete pier extending into Galveston Bay — one of the longest in the world. It's a local institution for fishing, crabbing, and watching ships navigate the Houston Ship Channel. Bring your own gear or rent from vendors at the base. Sunrise and sunset views are spectacular.
Bay Street Park and Waterfront
The Texas City waterfront along Bay Street has a park, boat ramp, and walking path with views of the bay and the industrial skyline. It's a quiet spot for an evening walk or morning coffee.
Nessler Park
Nessler Park is the city's main recreational complex — baseball fields, soccer fields, a walking track, and picnic areas. The park hosts community events throughout the year and is a good spot for a morning run.
Galveston Bay Fishing
Galveston Bay is one of the most productive fishing grounds on the Gulf Coast. Redfish, speckled trout, flounder, and sheepshead are all common catches. Several local guides operate out of Texas City and La Marque — a half-day guided trip is a great way to spend a day off.
A Few Local Tips
Traffic on I-45: The stretch between Texas City and League City can back up during Houston rush hours (7–9 AM and 4–7 PM). If you're commuting to a refinery, leave early or wait it out.
Weather: Gulf Coast weather is unpredictable. Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms, and hurricane season runs June through November. Keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center during peak season.
Cell service: AT&T and Verizon have solid coverage throughout Texas City. T-Mobile coverage is generally good but can be spotty in some industrial areas.
Local Facebook groups: "Texas City Community" and "Galveston County Buy/Sell/Trade" are active local groups useful for finding services, recommendations, and local events.
Your Home Base on the Gulf Coast
Texas City is a practical, affordable place to be based — especially if you're working in the petrochemical corridor. And with Little Thicket RV Resort as your home base, you've got full hookups, Wi-Fi, a pool, and a quiet wooded setting just minutes from everything on this list.
If you have questions about the area or need a recommendation, stop by the office — we're happy to point you in the right direction.
